Good to know

Fjords, lakes and rivers of Norway

Norway combines a long coastline of fjords and skerries with countless lakes and rivers. The sea tends to be warmest along the southern Skagerrak coast, where sheltered bays become inviting in high summer, while the west coast and the Norwegian Sea stay fresher. Lakes and rivers are fed by snowmelt and glaciers, so many remain cold until July, although smaller lowland lakes warm faster. The season is short and centred on July and August.

Nearly all of the 295 sites come from NVE, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, which publishes continuous river and lake measurements through its HydAPI service. They include stations on large river systems such as the Glomma, the Drammen river and the Skien watercourse. The coast is represented by only a few points, whose temperatures come from the Open-Meteo marine model and are labelled as model values. Coastal bathing spots are tested separately by the municipalities.

Municipalities check water quality at their bathing spots during summer and share the results locally or online. Lion's mane jellyfish can turn up in high summer, particularly along the Skagerrak. In regulated rivers, hydropower operations can change water levels quickly, even on a sunny day. Meltwater rivers are cold and often fast-flowing. When swimming in a fjord, remember that very cold water can lie just beneath a warm surface layer.
