Atlantic 23.8 °C. The coldest spot is Atlantic, Viana do Castelo at 14.9 °C. As of October 16, 2026, 263 locations from Instituto Hidrográfico and Copernicus Marine Service.
Portugal swims in the Atlantic. The west coast can be surprisingly cool in summer, because the prevailing northerly wind draws cold water up from below. Conditions become milder the further south you go, and the Algarve, especially its eastern part, is usually noticeably warmer than the west coast in summer. The sea tends to peak in August and September, and lifeguarded beaches generally operate from June to September.
Much of the data for the 263 sites is modelled. Coastal temperatures come mainly from the Open-Meteo marine model and are marked as model values in the app. Measured readings come from the wave buoys of the Instituto Hidrográfico, the Portuguese navy hydrographic institute, and from buoys and stations distributed by the Copernicus Marine Service. The beaches themselves are officially tested regardless of where the temperature comes from.
The Portuguese Environment Agency monitors bathing waters during the season, with ratings from excellent to poor under the EU Bathing Water Directive. On the west coast, swell, surf and rip currents are a serious matter even on sunny, calm-looking days. Lifeguarded beaches use green, yellow and red flags to show whether swimming is advisable. At unguarded beaches, it is worth watching the waves for a while before going in.
45 readings are measurements from official and open networks, above all Instituto Hidrográfico and Copernicus Marine Service; 218 values come from models. Beyond temperature, this page carries 191 official bathing-water ratings, tides for 261 coastal spots and wave height at 261 buoys.
