Good to know

Ireland's rivers and Atlantic shore

Ireland sits in the Atlantic, with a mild and changeable climate. The sea varies less over the year than on the continent and usually reaches its warmest in late summer, which is one reason year-round sea swimming has such a following here. Inland, rivers such as the Shannon, Blackwater, Suir, Lee, Barrow, Nore and Boyne run through the landscape. They warm up faster than the sea in summer but respond quickly to rainfall.

Nearly all of the 392 sites come from the Office of Public Works, which records water temperature alongside river levels and publishes it through waterlevel.ie. On BrrChecker, Ireland is therefore mainly a river country. The coast is covered by only a few points whose values come from the Open-Meteo marine model. They are labelled as model values and reflect conditions just offshore rather than the temperature in a particular cove.

Local authorities test bathing waters through the season, and the Environmental Protection Agency publishes ratings from excellent to poor under the EU Bathing Water Directive. Heavy rain can briefly lower water quality. Atlantic swell and rip currents can make even calm-looking beaches risky, and river levels and current can rise quickly after a downpour. As the water is usually cool, getting in slowly is a sensible habit.
