France faces the Channel, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and its overseas territories add the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. The Mediterranean coast has the longest season, starting early in summer and often lasting well into autumn. Brittany and the Channel coast stay cooler and tend to feel their best in August, with the Atlantic shore from the Loire to the Basque Country somewhere in between. Alpine lakes such as Lac d'Annecy, Lac du Bourget and Lake Geneva usually peak in late summer.
Most of the 2144 sites come from the official list of coastal bathing sites published by the health ministry through Atlasanté. Water temperatures at these sites are modelled by the Open-Meteo marine model rather than measured, and the app marks them as model values. Measured readings come from buoys and coastal stations distributed by the Copernicus Marine Service, with a handful of river gauges from Hub'Eau. For the Savoy lakes and Lake Geneva, BrrChecker uses the Alplakes lake models.
Regional health agencies sample every official bathing site during the season, and each one receives an EU bathing water rating from excellent to poor. On the Atlantic, surf and rip currents deserve respect, so it is worth swimming at lifeguarded beaches and following the flags. In the south, a Mistral wind can push the warm surface layer offshore, and the sea near the beach may be noticeably colder for a day or two afterwards.

France is coastline: Atlasanté lists the official bathing sites from Brittany to the Côte d'Azur with the season's samples, the marine model fills the open sea, Hub'Eau adds river measurements, and Lake Geneva comes via Alplakes.
