Italy is surrounded by sea: the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian to the west, the Ionian to the south and the Adriatic to the east. The Mediterranean warms from June and peaks in August, and in the south it often stays pleasant into October. The northern lakes, including Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Lago d'Iseo, usually reach their warmest in August. In South Tyrol, rivers like the Adige stay cool, while the region's bathing lakes warm noticeably in high summer.
Most coastal readings among the 241 sites come from the Open-Meteo marine model and carry a model label. Measurements come from the coastal stations of ISPRA's Rete Mareografica Nazionale. In South Tyrol, the provincial civil protection agency supplies data from bathing lakes and river gauges. The large lakes are covered by Alplakes lake models, complemented by measuring probes from the University of Brescia on Lago d'Iseo and from Eawag. Bathing sites are officially tested regardless of these temperature sources.
Regional environmental agencies and municipalities test bathing waters during the season, with ratings from excellent to poor under the EU Bathing Water Directive. On Lake Garda, regular winds shape the day: the Pelèr usually blows from the north in the morning and the Ora from the south in the afternoon, and both can raise sizeable waves. Lifeguarded sea beaches use flags to show whether swimming is advisable. Sea urchins are common on rocky shores, and jellyfish appear from time to time in summer.
