The Adriatic coast and its islands

Swimming in Croatia means the Adriatic. The coast runs from Istria and the Kvarner Gulf down through Dalmatia, fringed by islands and sheltered coves. The sea warms from June, reaches its peak in August and often stays pleasant into autumn. In early summer the northern waters around Istria and Kvarner tend to be a little cooler than those further south. Inland, rivers such as the Krka, Dobra and Drava offer a fresher alternative.

Most of the 1263 sites come from the national bathing water database maintained by IZOR, the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split. Sea temperature is recorded every time officials sample a beach during the season, so these are genuine measurements, though they arrive at intervals rather than continuously. The national weather service DHMZ supplies river and lake gauges. A few coastal places without their own measurements are filled in by the Open-Meteo marine model and labelled accordingly.

Each coastal bathing site is rated under the EU Bathing Water Directive, from excellent to poor. Wind matters more than many visitors expect. The bura blows cold and gusty from land to sea, can carry inflatables and small boats offshore within minutes and may draw cooler water up near the coast. The jugo from the south-east brings waves and murkier water. Sea urchins are common on rocky shores, so water shoes help, and submarine freshwater springs can leave surprisingly cold patches.
